In the third week. we made a prototype to show what we found from previous researches and tried to find inspiration and new information from it to improve our design process.
We wanted to find the differences between places where users might sleep in the day and the private environment for sleep. With these, maybe we could do something for better rest in the day.
Firstly, we did the sleep diary by ourselves, recording the feeling, activities, environments we sleep during the whole day.
my one-day sleep diary
Secondly, we did interviews with different users about their sleep experiences in different environments.
We found that
1. Environment: - Unstable: physical disruptive factors, other people - Difficult to have a comfortable sleep posture - Try to create a better sleep environment with limited resources
2. Sleep State: - Light sleep - Less sleep time - Lower environmental requirement
3. Feeling: - Uneasy, vigilant - Fettered, “being watched”
Key words concluded from interviews
Blue:environment; Red:feeling;Black:behaviors
Then we made sketches about how people sleep as we observed in different environments.
I sketched the post of sleeping on the underground
I sketched the post of sleeping on the bench
Most of the positions are in the corners, the body is curled up, showing a state of self-protection, preferring to find a medium that can be relied upon, and adjusting the relatively comfortable posture. Some will also take the initiative to protect belongings and cover the face.
They always tend to utilize limited resources to help themself sleep.
brainstorming about the prototype
cotton can sticked by the wires by test
the process of making prototype
In the model making, we tried wires, strings made by paper and woolen yarn to test the visual effect. Then we chose paper strings and woolen yarn to present different factors.
the demonstration of our prototype
This prototype aimed to show the relationship between the feeling of sleep in the private environment.
1. Light covered with cotton presents self awareness when sleeping.
2. Strings present different constraints in the public environment.
3. Lights through holes present eyesight from the surrounding.
4. The moving process presents a change from private to public environment.
5. Cottons are sticked on the strings gradually presenting a reduction of sense of safety in the feeling.
6. Strings become intensive to show the physical and mental constraints increasing.
If we could to change some elements reduced in this process, maybe we can help people rest better in an environment out of the bedroom.
I originally thought that the private environment is a closed space, but after our researched I found that private and public are relative, there is no definite limit. The same environment, according to the controllable range, can be converted between private and public.
