The forth week we decided our final design


1. Develop ideas


We found that when the staff pick up a plant to introduce, we could focused on the plant, seeing more details and got more information.

Therefore, we thought about whether we could make an experience for users, let them focus on the small plant from the garden which is full of serried plants.

We thought that, based on our intelligent torch, if we could make a dark environment for users to explore.


2. Model making


We found this principle and did a test

In the test, we found that we can more focus on the specific plant in the dark, using a torch to light up. We can see more details and shadow and light is beautiful.


3. Elements preparation

We took videos of the model to test the light. We found that the visual effect seen by eyes was much better than being recorded in the videos. This could show an experience of visiting the garden at night.

This model was made for showing exploration experience in the dark environment. The torch lights up the plant and we can more focus on the plant to see more details and the sense of exploration can be enhanced.

This image was much better than the above one. I used the real picture of the garden I took as the background to show how user experience in this environment.


plant review

I designed and made this "Plant Review" as part our concept. Its rarity is shown like a HP in the computer games to remind user that plants also need protection. Applications are made to show that plants are really important to human being's life.

This came from our previous concept which was not integrated. The concept was, may be we could make a plant kingdom and insects are workers of the kingdom. They can be personalized and give users a feeling that they also have strong vitality and their have equal life in the world. Due to limitation of time, we didn't make it systematic and integrated. Also, the technology isn't practical enough to support our design.

4. Powerpoint


The process of experience

This showed the whole experience designed from our concept. The user enters in a dark environment and use an intelligent torch to explore the plants. When a plant is lighted up by the torch, it can be identified. Then the digital screen will show information about its original living environment, including the location, temperature and humidity. If the user want, he can listen to the earphone for more detailed and professional information. When a toxic plant is lighted up, the torch has vibration to remind user not to touch. In the whole process, the torch will record the order and time the user watching the plant and upload to the icloud. When the user exit the environment, he will receive a review of plants he watched, showing their rarity, life time and application. This aims to remind people the importance of the plants and it's convenient for review and save in the future.


5. Feedback and Summery

1. We can make an experience of visiting the garden at night with better light effect.

We think this can be more macro than our dark house. Users have chance to see activities of plants and insects at night and the nighttime garden can be utilized.

2. We can make our design more practical and add more details to the intelligent torch,

3. We can make an experience for audience in the presentation instead of too much information in the one page of powerpoint.

These photos shown above present how a garden look like at night and how user explore the garden. We use two layers to add light effect and users can use a torch to light up the plants. When user sit on the chair, they can see plants under their foot.


6. Reflection

Before collaboration, we need to clearly know what information we actually need and make plans in advance. Then we try to find a suitable person to collaborate. This can improve our working efficiency and quality. Collaborations with people in different standpoints are quite essential for the design process. We can think multidimensional from more aspects and make more practical designs. In the future, we will try to make use of related resources as much as possible and improve our communication skills for better collaboration.

Though we came across some difficulties for example my teammate was ill and I needed to comfort her, and we also sometimes argued with each other during the process, and time was really limited, we didn't give up improving our design. We did as much as we could and may be still something was lacked in the blog.
